Quick answer

The Schlage Encode Plus is the best smart lock for most front doors: it replaces the deadbolt, has built-in Wi-Fi and supports Apple Home Key. If you want a fingerprint reader, the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch with Wi-Fi is the pick, and the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock is the one to get if you want to keep your existing deadbolt and keys.

These are 7 smart locks for a standard front door, from clip-on retrofits to full deadbolt replacements, compared on how they install, how each one opens and how long the batteries are meant to last.

A smart lock is only useful if it fits your door and your phone. Some bolt onto the inside of the deadbolt you already own. Others replace it, and a few only make sense if you have an iPhone or a hub at home. We compared specs, manufacturer information and owner reviews to sort out which lock suits which door.

Below are the picks, a side-by-side spec table, the problems owners report most often, and a short guide to choosing between a retrofit and a full replacement.

1. Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt — Best Overall

Best OverallSchlageEncode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt
  • Built-in Wi-Fi, no hub
  • Apple Home Key
  • Up to 100 codes
See photos on Amazon

Best for: Most front doors, especially households with iPhones and Apple Watches

8.5/10Our score
  • Security9.0
  • Ease of use9.0
  • Smart home support8.5
  • Battery life7.5
See Photos & Price on Amazon

What we like

  • Schlage lists ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certification for the lock
  • Home Key lets an iPhone or Apple Watch unlock with a tap
  • Up to 100 access codes managed in the Schlage Home app
  • Keeps a physical key as a backup

Keep in mind

  • Needs a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network
  • No outside terminal to jump-start dead batteries
  • Replaces your deadbolt, so installation takes more work than a clip-on

The Encode Plus is a deadbolt that connects to your home Wi-Fi directly, so there is no bridge to buy and nothing to plug in. Schlage's product page lists up to 100 access codes, and the lock runs on four AA batteries. Battery life depends on use, and owners report different results.

The feature that sets it apart for iPhone owners is Home Key. According to MacRumors and 9to5Mac, it needs a recent iPhone on iOS 15 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or newer, and 9to5Mac reports the lock keeps responding for up to five hours after the phone runs out of power.

The main drawback is the dead-battery case. There is no terminal to power the lock from outside, so you rely on the key or a spare battery plan.

Skip it if you want to keep your existing deadbolt, because the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock goes over the one you have.

2. Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch with Wi-Fi — Best Fingerprint Pick

Best Fingerprint PickYaleAssure Lock 2 Touch with Wi-Fi
  • Fingerprint + keypad
  • Wi-Fi version available
  • Runs on 4 AA
See photos on Amazon

Best for: Families who want to open the door with a fingerprint instead of a phone

8.0/10Our score
  • Security8.5
  • Ease of use8.5
  • Smart home support8.0
  • Battery life7.0
See Photos & Price on Amazon

What we like

  • Fingerprint reader works for kids and guests who have no phone
  • Wi-Fi model needs no separate bridge
  • Rated for roughly -22 to 140°F per retailer listings
  • Auto-lock can work with the DoorSense door sensor

Keep in mind

  • Some owner reviews report inconsistent fingerprint reads
  • Wi-Fi searching can drain the four AA batteries faster, according to some owners
  • Many bundles share one model number, so check you buy the Wi-Fi version

This is the fingerprint version of the Yale Assure Lock 2, not the standard touchscreen model. It has a keypad, a fingerprint reader and optional auto-unlock through the Yale Access app. Listings say the Wi-Fi version has the connection built into a module, so remote access works without a bridge. Power comes from four AA batteries.

The standard Assure Lock 2 has no fingerprint reader, and the Touch model adds one. Retail listings cite an IPX5 rating and an operating range of -22 to 140°F, which suits a front door that gets weather.

Owner reviews are mixed on two points: fingerprint recognition that sometimes needs a second try, and battery drain when the lock has a weak Wi-Fi signal. Keep the lock close to a strong 2.4 GHz signal and the second problem mostly goes away.

Skip it if you want Apple Home Key, since the Schlage Encode Plus, the Level locks and the Aqara U200 support it.

3. August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th Gen) — Best for Keeping Your Deadbolt

Best for Keeping Your DeadboltAugustWi-Fi Smart Lock (4th Gen)
  • Fits over your deadbolt
  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • 2 CR123A batteries
See photos on Amazon

Best for: Renters and anyone who wants to keep the current deadbolt and keys

7.5/10Our score
  • Security7.5
  • Ease of use8.5
  • Smart home support8.0
  • Battery life6.0
See Photos & Price on Amazon

What we like

  • Nothing changes on the outside of the door
  • Easy to remove and take with you
  • Built-in Wi-Fi works without a bridge
  • DoorSense sensor tells the lock whether the door is closed

Keep in mind

  • Battery life is the most common owner criticism
  • Does not fit mortise, integrated or rim cylinder locks
  • No keypad unless you add the separate accessory

The August is one of two retrofits here, with the Aqara U200 the other. Listings describe it as mounting on the interior side of a standard single-cylinder deadbolt, with built-in Wi-Fi on a 2.4 GHz network and two CR123A batteries in the box. Because your original key still turns the bolt, it is a sensible choice if you rent or share keys with a neighbor.

Short battery life is a common owner complaint, and connection quality affects battery drain too. We found no announcement of a newer August Wi-Fi lock, but retailer stock for individual finishes varies.

Check the spindle shape on your deadbolt before buying, since a few owners report trouble with non-standard ones.

Skip it if you want a keypad on the outside or a long battery life, because the Schlage Encode Plus adds a keypad and four AA cells.

4. Level Lock+ (Wi-Fi, Apple Home Key) — Best for a Clean Look

Best for a Clean LookLevelLock+ (Wi-Fi, Apple Home Key)
  • Hidden smart hardware
  • Apple Home Key
  • One CR2 battery
See photos on Amazon

Best for: People who want a smart lock that does not look like one

7.9/10Our score
  • Security8.0
  • Ease of use8.0
  • Smart home support8.5
  • Battery life7.0
See Photos & Price on Amazon

What we like

  • Looks like an ordinary deadbolt, with no bulky keypad
  • Home Key unlocking needs no network on the lock side, per Level
  • Connect Wi-Fi bridge enables remote access
  • Level's own estimate is about six months on a CR2 cell

Keep in mind

  • Powermoves reported less consistent Home Key reads than Schlage
  • The keypad is a separate purchase on many bundles
  • Door must be 1.75 to 2 inches thick

Level fits the smart hardware inside the door edge, so from the outside you see a regular deadbolt with a keyway. Level's spec sheet gives the lock a weight of 23.5 oz (665 g), a 2.125-inch bore hole and a door thickness range of 1.75 to 2 inches. It runs on a single CR2 lithium cell that Level estimates at roughly six months.

Home Key needs a recent iPhone or an Apple Watch Series 4 or newer, and Level says the key works without a network connection. Remote access needs the Connect Wi-Fi bridge, which should sit within 20 feet of the lock. Level has since launched the Level Lock Pro with Home Key and Matter over Thread, which appears to be the current model, so check Level's site for whether the Lock+ with Connect bridge is still sold before buying.

Powermoves, a long-term Home Key comparison, found the Level less consistent on the first tap than the Schlage, so expect an occasional second tap.

Skip it if you want a keypad built in or a door thinner than 1.75 inches, because the Schlage Encode Plus has the keypad and fits 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, per its listing.

5. eufy Smart Lock E32 — Best for Matter and Thread

Best for Matter and ThreadeufySmart Lock E32
  • Matter over Thread
  • Fingerprint unlock
  • Up to 8 months, 8 AA
See photos on Amazon

Best for: Homes with a Thread border router, such as a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K

8.1/10Our score
  • Security7.5
  • Ease of use8.0
  • Smart home support9.0
  • Battery life8.0
See Photos & Price on Amazon

What we like

  • Matter over Thread works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google and SmartThings hubs
  • eufy rates the 8 AA set for up to 8 months
  • Fingerprint reader plus a physical key as a fallback
  • Newer than the E30 it follows

Keep in mind

  • Needs a Thread border router for Matter control
  • Eight batteries cost more per change than a four-cell lock
  • Announced in June 2026, so long-term owner reports are thin

The E32 is one of the Matter locks eufy announced in June 2026, and the E30 listing we found was marked unavailable. Matter Alpha reports the E32 was announced on June 11, 2026, and eufy's page lists up to 8 months of battery life on 8 AA cells, depending on how often you use it. The CSA certification listing shows Matter over Thread.

Thread is the catch. Matter Alpha notes it needs a border router such as a HomePod mini, an Apple TV 4K or a compatible Echo or Nest hub. With one in place, the lock appears in Apple Home, Alexa and Google at once, which suits mixed households.

Because the model is new, there is little long-term owner feedback yet. The fingerprint reader gets only a general claim from eufy that it improves with use, without numbers.

Skip it if you have no Thread border router and want Matter control, because the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch with Wi-Fi connects through your router instead.

6. Aqara Smart Lock U200 (with Fingerprint Keypad) — Best Retrofit With Home Key

Best Retrofit With Home KeyAqaraSmart Lock U200 (with Fingerprint Keypad)
  • Retrofit install
  • Home Key + fingerprint
  • Rechargeable battery
See photos on Amazon

Best for: Apple households who want Home Key without replacing their deadbolt

8.0/10Our score
  • Security7.5
  • Ease of use8.0
  • Smart home support8.5
  • Battery life8.0
See Photos & Price on Amazon

What we like

  • Keeps your deadbolt and key, like the August
  • Fingerprint keypad with NFC for iPhone and Apple Watch
  • Rechargeable lock battery over USB-C, up to about six months
  • Matter over Thread

Keep in mind

  • Remote access needs an Aqara Hub M3 or other supported hub
  • Fits single-cylinder deadbolts only
  • Keypad runs on four AAA cells or wired power

The U200 is one of the few locks that combines a retrofit install with Apple Home Key. It mounts over a single-cylinder deadbolt, and the Amazon listing includes the fingerprint keypad that goes on the outside. The listing says the keypad's NFC lets an iPhone or Apple Watch unlock even when the keypad is powered off.

Retail listings describe a rechargeable Li-ion lock battery that Cult of Mac and iClarified put at up to six months per charge, and the keypad takes four AAA batteries or 12 to 24V wiring. The keypad is rated IPX5 and works from about -18°C to 66°C.

Thread and Matter are the other half of the story. The listing says remote unlock requires an Aqara Hub M3, so budget for it if you want to open the door from away.

Skip it if you do not have an Apple hub or Aqara hub, because the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock needs no hub.

7. Lockly Vision Elite — Best With a Built-In Camera

Best With a Built-In CameraLocklyVision Elite
  • 1080p camera, 170°
  • Up to 99 fingerprints
  • microSD storage
See photos on Amazon

Best for: Homes that want one device to replace the lock and the doorbell

7.1/10Our score
  • Security8.0
  • Ease of use7.0
  • Smart home support7.0
  • Battery life6.5
See Photos & Price on Amazon

What we like

  • Lock, doorbell and camera replace two devices
  • Video saves to a microSD card, with no subscription for storage
  • Fingerprint, keypad, app and key access
  • Grade 2 deadbolt per Tom's Guide

Keep in mind

  • Recharge interval depends on sun exposure
  • The Wi-Fi bridge must be wired to your router
  • Large front plate that does not suit every door style

The Vision Elite packs a 1080p camera with a wide-angle view and night vision into the exterior plate. Tom's Guide lists the front unit at 7 by 2.8 by 2 inches and rates the deadbolt as ANSI Grade 2. Lowe's listings say it stores up to 99 fingerprints.

Video goes to a microSD card in the bridge, which SecurityInfoWatch says means no storage subscription. Power is a removable 10,000 mAh battery topped up by the solar panel; recharge timing depends on how much sun the door gets, so check Lockly's manual. The bridge connects over an Ethernet cable and Wi-Fi, so it needs a spot near your router.

The fit is narrower than other locks here: Listings give a door thickness range of roughly 1⅜ or 1 7/16 to 2 inches, so check Lockly's listed range and your door's cutouts before buying. Our guide to the [best video doorbell without a subscription](/home/best-video-doorbell-without-subscription/) covers the stand-alone camera route.

Skip it if you want a slim lock, because the Level Lock+ looks like an ordinary deadbolt.

How We Chose

We compared manufacturer specs, retailer listings, professional reviews and owner reports for smart locks that fit a standard US front door. The picks cover retrofit locks, full replacements, fingerprint readers, Apple Home Key and a built-in camera, so each one has a different job. If you are still setting up the rest of the house, our best smart thermostat guide covers the next device most people add.

Key Specs Side by Side

The numbers below come from manufacturer pages and listings. A dash means we did not find the spec published.

Schlage Encode Plus Replaces deadbolt 4 AA Keypad, app, Home Key, key Yes Built-in Wi-Fi
Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch (Wi-Fi) Replaces deadbolt 4 AA Fingerprint, keypad, app — Built-in Wi-Fi

Aqara U200 Retrofit Rechargeable Fingerprint, Home Key, key Yes Hub M3
Lockly Vision Elite Replaces deadbolt 10,000 mAh Fingerprint, app, key — Wi-Fi bridge

Retrofit vs Full Replacement

A retrofit lock sits on the inside of your current deadbolt, so installation takes minutes and the outside of the door does not change. A full replacement swaps the whole deadbolt, which means a screwdriver and some alignment but gives you a keypad on the outside.

Pick a retrofit if you rent or like your current hardware. Pick a replacement if you want a keypad or fingerprint reader for guests, kids and dog walkers. If you need to adjust a strike plate or enlarge a bore, a cordless drill makes it quick.

Common Complaints Owners Report

Across retailer reviews and professional write-ups, a few problems repeat:

  • Battery drain. Owners of the August and some Yale models report batteries running down sooner than the rated figure, especially with a weak Wi-Fi signal.
  • Fingerprint misses. Some Yale Touch owners report that wet or dirty fingers sometimes need a second try.
  • Home Key taps. Powermoves reported more misses on the Level than on the Schlage.
  • Network setup. Most Wi-Fi locks need a 2.4 GHz network, so a 5 GHz-only router will not work.

Who Should Skip Which Lock

The August is wrong for anyone with a mortise or rim cylinder lock. The Lockly is the pick to skip for anyone who wants a slim lock.

Real-Life Scenarios

  • Rental apartment with an iPhone: the Aqara U200 or August keeps the landlord’s deadbolt.
  • House with kids and no phones for them: the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch with its fingerprint reader.
  • New place with a lot of smart devices: the eufy E32 on Thread, or the Schlage with Home Key.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a smart lock be used on an existing front door?

Yes. Retrofit locks such as the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock and the Aqara U200 mount over a standard single-cylinder deadbolt. Full replacements such as the Schlage Encode Plus fit standard doors with a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch thickness and a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset, per its listing.

What happens if the batteries die?

Most of these locks warn you through the app and have a low-battery alert before they stop. Schlage and August keep a physical key option, so you can still open the door, while the key-free Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch has no keyway. The Schlage Encode Plus cannot be powered from outside, so keep spare AA batteries handy.

Do I need Wi-Fi for a smart lock?

Only for remote access. Bluetooth handles unlocking when you are near the door. Built-in Wi-Fi models such as the Schlage, August and Yale Wi-Fi version connect to a 2.4 GHz network directly, while Level and Aqara use a bridge or hub for remote control.

What is Apple Home Key?

Home Key stores a digital key in Apple Wallet so you can unlock by tapping an iPhone or Apple Watch. It needs an iPhone XS or newer on iOS 15 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or newer, per 9to5Mac and Level.

Are smart locks as secure as normal deadbolts?

It depends on the lock. Check the ANSI/BHMA grade on each manufacturer page; Tom's Guide lists the Lockly Vision Elite as Grade 2. Retrofit locks still rely on the strength of the deadbolt you already have.

Final Verdict

For most front doors, the Schlage Encode Plus is the lock to buy: built-in Wi-Fi, a keypad and Home Key for iPhone households. If your household wants fingerprints, go for the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch with Wi-Fi, and if you rent or want to keep your deadbolt, the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock goes on without changing the outside of the door.

The Level Lock+ suits people who want a lock that blends in, the Aqara U200 gives you Home Key without replacing the deadbolt, and the eufy Smart Lock E32 is the match for a Thread-based smart home. The Lockly Vision Elite makes sense only if you also want a doorbell camera on the same door.
