Quick answer
The Amazon Echo Show 8 (2025) is the best smart display for most homes: an 8.7-inch screen, a 13 MP camera and a built-in Zigbee, Matter and Thread hub. Google households should look at the Nest Hub 2nd Gen, which has no camera and adds sleep sensing, and anyone who wants a wall panel for smart-home controls should consider the Echo Hub. Expect ads on Amazon's displays, which owners report cannot be switched off.
This guide compares seven smart displays by room: kitchen counters, bedside tables, family walls and smart-home control panels. We judged each on screen size, camera and privacy controls, smart-home hub features and the annoyances owners mention most.
Most of the field is Amazon's Echo Show line, because we found no new Google display announced since the 2021 Nest Hub. We compared specs, manufacturer information and owner reviews, and we point out where the information we found was incomplete.
Below are the picks, a table of the specs that decide the purchase, the main complaints, and a short guide to matching a display to a room.

1. Amazon Echo Show 8 (2025) — Best Overall
- 8.7-Inch Touchscreen
- 13 MP Auto-Framing Camera
- Zigbee, Matter, Thread
Best for: Most homes that want one display for the kitchen, video calls and smart-home control
What we like
- Larger, brighter screen than the previous generation, according to TechRadar
- Built-in Zigbee, Matter and Thread border router
- Spatial audio with a woofer, and louder bass than the 2023 model, according to Amazon
- 13 MP camera that keeps you in frame during calls
Keep in mind
- No physical camera shutter, only a mic/camera button and a software setting
- Home screen ads, which owners say cannot be turned off
- The screen no longer rotates to follow you
The Echo Show 8 is the display most people should start with. Amazon lists an 8.7-inch touchscreen, a 13 MP camera with auto-framing, Wi-Fi 6E, and a hub that handles Zigbee, Matter and Thread devices, so it can control lights, locks and sensors without a separate bridge. Reviewers do not agree on the screen resolution (1340 x 800 versus 1280 x 800), so check the listing.
Amazon says bass is up to twice that of the 2023 model, and the display supports spatial audio. TechRadar and Expert Reviews praise the screen and audio, and criticize a cluttered interface and the price increase over the third generation.
Privacy needs a note. The camera has no shutter. Amazon provides a mic/camera button that cuts power and a setting that disables the camera, but a sliding cover would be easier to trust.
Skip it if you want a physical camera cover; the Echo Show 5 has one, and the Echo Hub and Nest Hub have no camera at all.
2. Amazon Echo Show 11 (2025) — Best for Video Calls and Family Use
- 10.95-Inch Full HD
- 13 MP Camera
- Spatial Audio
Best for: Families that watch video, make calls or follow recipes from a bigger screen
What we like
- 1920 x 1200 screen, according to Amazon
- Zigbee, Matter and Thread hub built in
- Dual full-range drivers and a 2.8-inch woofer
- A tilt and swivel stand is available separately
Keep in mind
- No physical camera shutter
- Some owners report touchscreen lag or Wi-Fi hiccups
- Ads appear on the home screen
The Echo Show 11 is the Show 8 with a bigger Full HD panel. Amazon lists 10.95 inches at 1920 x 1200, a 13 MP camera, Wi-Fi 6E and the same Zigbee, Matter and Thread hub. The sound comes from dual full-range speakers plus a 2.8-inch woofer.
TechRadar's review is titled as a bigger screen but less for the privacy-conscious, because the camera has no shutter. Amazon owners report praise for the screen and sound, with some complaints about lag and Wi-Fi.
The stand (40-degree tilt and 360-degree swivel) is a separate purchase. The Show 11 is about space on the counter and sharper recipes and video.
Skip it if you have a small counter; the Show 8 saves space and does nearly everything the same.
3. Amazon Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen) — Best for Bedside
- 5.5-Inch Screen
- Built-In Camera Shutter
- Compact Size
Best for: Nightstands, desks and kids' rooms where a small screen and a camera cover matter
What we like
- Physical camera shutter
- Small footprint for nightstands
- Speaker has doubled bass compared to the previous generation, according to Amazon
- Good as an alarm clock, with weather and timers
Keep in mind
- Camera is only 2 MP and grainy, according to reviewers
- Small screen is hard to use for recipes or video
- No Netflix support
The Echo Show 5 is the bedside option. Amazon lists a 5.5-inch touchscreen, a 2 MP camera with a built-in shutter and a 1.75-inch speaker. We did not find Zigbee or Thread hub features on its listing, so do not count on it as a smart-home hub.
Expert Reviews and SlashGear describe it as a good alarm clock and bedside controller, with complaints about price at launch, a grainy camera and occasional touchscreen lag. Auto-dim can be inconsistent.
Its shutter is a point in its favor, though the Show 15 and Show 21 also have one.
Skip it if you want to cook from it or watch video; the Show 8 is a better all-rounder.
4. Amazon Echo Hub — Best Smart-Home Control Panel
- 8-Inch Touchscreen
- No Camera
- Wall Bracket Included
Best for: Smart-home owners who want a dedicated control panel by the door or in the kitchen
What we like
- No camera, so no privacy shutter to worry about
- Amazon says some devices keep working locally if the internet goes down
- Wall bracket included, with PoE adapter options
- Built-in hub covers Zigbee, Matter, Thread and Sidewalk
Keep in mind
- No Z-Wave support
- Interface can feel sluggish, according to some reviewers
- Weak speaker and a poor photo frame
The Echo Hub is for controlling devices, not for calls. Amazon lists an 8-inch, 1280 x 800 display, a built-in hub for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter, Thread and Sidewalk, and a wall bracket in the box. Amazon says some devices can still be controlled locally if the internet is down.
Tom's Guide and Expert Reviews find it easy to use once set up. They also list the limits: no Z-Wave, an interface that can lag, little customization and a speaker that is better for alerts than music.
It has no camera, which will appeal to anyone uneasy about one in the kitchen. It also needs to stay plugged in.
Skip it if you want calls, video or a good speaker; the Show 8 does more.
5. Amazon Echo Show 15 — Best Wall-Mounted Family Hub
- 15.6-Inch Full HD
- Fire TV Built In
- Wall Mount Ready
Best for: Busy households that want a shared calendar and chore board in the kitchen
What we like
- Large widgets for calendars, lists and photos
- Fire TV and a remote are included, according to Amazon
- Wall mount is compatible with the Show 21; a tilt stand is sold separately
- Zigbee, Matter and Thread border router, according to Amazon
Keep in mind
- Widgets cannot be resized
- Speakers are criticized by reviewers
- Ads and suggestions can clutter the screen
The Echo Show 15 is the one to hang by the fridge. Amazon lists a 15.6-inch, 1920 x 1080 display, a 13 MP camera, Fire TV built in, a remote and four speakers. The tilt stand is sold separately.
TechRadar's review praises the wall mounting and notes that widgets cannot be resized and the daily schedule widget is small. Reviewers also criticize the speakers and the amount of clutter on the home screen.
Amazon and reviewers describe a built-in camera shutter and a mic/camera off button.
Skip it if you do not have a spare wall; the Show 8 is cheaper and takes less room.
6. Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen) — Best for Google Users
- No Camera
- Soli Sleep Sensing
- 7-Inch Touchscreen
Best for: Google Home users and light sleepers who want bedside sleep sensing without a camera
What we like
- No camera, plus a mic-off switch
- Soli radar enables contactless sleep sensing, which Google's store page says is a preview offered at no extra charge
- Thread border router and Chromecast built in
- Photo frame mode without home-screen ads, as far as we found
Keep in mind
- Hardware dates from 2021
- Gemini Live needs Google Home Premium
- No Zigbee radio and no wall mount
The Nest Hub (2nd gen) launched in March 2021 and is still sold in Google's US store. Google lists a 7-inch 1024 x 600 touchscreen, three microphones with a mic-off switch, a Soli radar chip, and no camera at all.
Soli powers Motion Sense and Sleep Sensing. Google's store page says Sleep Sensing is a preview offered at no extra charge, and Google says it may fold the feature into a paid health plan in future, so check the current terms. Tom's Guide and PCWorld recommend it as the bedside display for sleep tracking.
The Gemini for Home upgrade is one-way. Gemini Live needs Google Home Premium, per Google's support page. We found no announced successor, and a Google Home Display has so far only turned up in app code, according to 9to5Google.
Skip it if you want video calls or a bigger screen; Google offers neither here.
7. Amazon Echo Show 21 — Best for Living-Room Walls
- 21.5-Inch Full HD
- Fire TV Built In
- Zigbee, Matter, Thread
Best for: Large open-plan homes where the display doubles as a small TV and family hub
What we like
- Biggest screen in this guide
- Fire TV and a remote included
- Zigbee, Matter and Thread border router
- Camera has a physical shutter, according to Amazon and TechRadar
Keep in mind
- Heavy at about 10.7 lb, per Amazon
- Speakers are a common complaint
- Stand sold separately
The Echo Show 21 is for homes where the display is closer to a small TV. Amazon lists a 21.5-inch 1920 x 1080 screen, Fire TV, a remote, a 13 MP camera with a shutter, a Zigbee, Matter and Thread hub, and a weight of 10.7 lb. The stand is a separate purchase.
Smart Home Compared notes that speaker quality is a common complaint at this size, so plan on a soundbar if you watch a lot. Ads and suggestions apply here too.
Skip it if you do not have wall space; the Show 15 is half the size.
How We Chose
We compared manufacturer specs and reviewer coverage from TechRadar, Tom’s Guide, Expert Reviews, PCWorld and Google’s and Amazon’s own pages. Screen size, camera privacy, smart-home hub support and ads decided the ranking. If you are buying for a relative, our best digital photo frame for grandparents may be a better fit than a smart display.

Common Complaints and How to Avoid Them
The loudest complaint is ads. Tom’s Guide, Gigazine and TechSpot community posts describe full-screen ads on Echo Show displays and none of them found a way to turn them off. If that bothers you, the Nest Hub is the safer choice, since we found no reports of ads on it. The next is camera privacy on the Show 8 and 11, which have a button and a software toggle but no cover. Larger Shows draw criticism for weak speakers, and the Echo Hub for lacking Z-Wave.
Matching a Display to a Room
For a kitchen counter, the Show 8. For a bedside table, the Nest Hub if you use Google or the Show 5 if you want a camera cover. For a hallway or kitchen wall, the Echo Hub if you want controls only, or the Show 15 if you want calendars and Fire TV. For an open-plan living space, the Show 21. If you are also thinking about thermostat control, see our best smart thermostat guide.
Who Should Skip Which Pick
The Show 8 and 11 are not for people who want a physical camera cover. The Nest Hub is not for video calls. The Echo Hub is not for music. The Show 21 is not for small kitchens. Browse our tech gifts under $100 if you are shopping for a present.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which smart display is best for the kitchen?
The Echo Show 8 is the best fit for most kitchens: the screen is large enough for recipes and video and small enough for a counter. For a wall by the fridge, the Show 15 shows calendars and lists at a glance.
Do Echo Show displays show ads?
Yes. Tom's Guide, TechSpot community posts and Gigazine report full-screen ads on Echo Show home screens, including photo-frame mode, with no off switch reported.
Do smart displays have a camera cover?
It varies. The Echo Show 5, 15 and 21 have a built-in shutter, the Echo Show 8 and 11 (2025) have a mic/camera button but no cover, and the Echo Hub and Nest Hub have no camera.
Do I need an Alexa+ subscription?
Standard Alexa works on these displays. Alexa+ is included with Prime and sold as a separate plan otherwise, and the terms change, so check Amazon's Alexa+ page.
Is there a newer Google smart display coming?
As of this writing, we found no announcement. A Google Home Display has appeared in the Google Home app code, according to 9to5Google, but nothing is official.
Final Verdict
The Echo Show 8 is the best smart display for most people, with a good screen, strong sound and a hub for Zigbee, Matter and Thread devices. Pick the Nest Hub 2nd Gen if you use Google Home and want a camera-free bedside display, the Echo Hub if you want a wall panel for smart-home controls, and the Show 15 if the kitchen wall needs a family calendar.
The Echo Show models here show ads and the Show 8 and 11 have no camera shutter, so decide how much those matter before you buy.
